I’m proud to announce a new show coming up on 3 March 2019.

It’s about what you see when you look back at the past. Especially for seniors (and the deep well of life experience and wisdom they collect over decades).

Here’s the poster:

2019:02:05 FINAL Lucus Introduces_ Childhood for Grownups

You might ask, why the title ‘Childhood for Grownups’?

Schumann didn’t write his ‘Scenes from Childhood’ for children. He wrote them for adults. For adults like you to use your life experiences to understand and step back into a child’s shoes with the wiser eyes of maturity.

Quick details:

Show Title: Lucus Introduces: Childhood for Grownups

Who: Your friendly neighbourhood Canberra pianist, Lucus Allerton.

Music: Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen (‘Scenes from Childhood’)

Stories: From Robert Schumann’s curious life

When: Sunday 3 March 3.30pm.

Where: Wesley Music Centre, Forrest

Why you should attend: Armed with a piano and a PA system, Lucus shares with you entertaining episodes from Schumann’s life, and stories about his Kinderszenen music, all told with verve and personality. In the show Lucus celebrates a grownup’s gifts of hindsight and wisdom by gazing back into common childhood moments.

Cost of Tickets: Adults: $35. Concession: $30.

Early bird prices until Sun 24 Feb: Adults: $30. Concession: $25.

I’ll share things like…

  • The dark and frightening side of imagination many of us suffer… which no rationality (nor insensitive parent) can cure.

  • The parenting method Schumann discovered that let him relive his childhood all over again… and again.

  • What Schumann’s many hangovers teach us about childhood creativity and the potential perks of headaches.

  • Schumann’s shameless ‘Pleading Child’ trick he used to pay for his banquet meals, university tuition, and Eurotrip vacations. (And why he bemoaned his lack of bullets)

  • The PERFECT number of children Schumann prescribed for others (and why).

  • How we can point, laugh, and sympathise at Schumann’s Smug Parent Syndrome.

  • How a crackling episode of the Simpsons helps you understand scene No.8 (At the Fireside)

  • The number one performance mistake that DESTROYS the sense of childlike excitement of scene No. 1 ‘Of Foreign Lands and Peoples’. (Even top pianists Martha Argerich and Vladmir Horowitz make this mistake!)

  • How one boy’s nonsense scrawls made Schumann laugh, but is really one of the most profound metaphors of human life ever seen.

  • The sliced bread that soothed Schumann’s soul, and why life forces us to butter that bread ourselves.

  • What the difference between a duck and a goose teaches about the triviality and seriousness of childhood humiliation.

  • The ‘Love Prescription’ a doctor recommended Schumann to treat his panic attacks and loss of consciousness… And could backfire if YOU tried it.

  • Why there is no such thing as a wise child.

… All in an hour’s performance.

(Give or take)

What’s more, I’ll have a nice PA set up to amplify my pleasing baritone voice, so that you’ll never strain to hear any of the juicy stories I share from Schumann’s life.

Purposefully set on a Sunday afternoon (3.30pm 3 March), this show is timed so that you’ll be able to enjoy the cosy wooden floors and walls of the Wesley Music Centre. At a time where there is still plenty of sunshine to breathe in and enjoy.

If you know anyone who might be interested in this show, please forward it and share it around!
